In March of 1992 I finished sculpting the Gallimimus maquette for JURASSIC PARK. After it was molded I painted two castings; one casting was for Industrial Light and Magic to use as a guide for the digital model and the second was reference for Stan Winston Studio.
Steven Spielberg wanted the color scheme to be that of a colorful bird. Several of us at the studio submitted artwork with color variations for this dinosaur; he picked the one that I’m painting in the photo. When you see the film, you’ll notice that sometime between the time of this photo and ILM creating the herd scene, the coloration changed to something very different. I actually prefer the earth-tone approach the digital artists took.
